I compiled this information from Internet research, phone calls to agencies and chatting with numerous people online, over the phone and meeting them in person. When talking to people I am always on the look out for any information to add to my website which may benefit others. I found out about a few of these from friends of mine I had met in person from online and from television and late night radio commercials.
My only motive is to help out others. Most of these are available in the Greenville County, South Carolina area and the rest of the Upstate of SC but the same or similar programs are also available elsewhere. I live in Greenville County that’s why I focused on this area, though some are available statewide or nationwide.
I found that there are a number of programs and benefits that many do not know about. Some people I have told this information to never pursued it even though it was to their advantage to do so, they just brushed it off but that's their decision.
This information is accurate to the best of my knowledge and the links posted on here will lead to finding additional programs and benefits. With the changes in government some of these may be eventually cut, others may be added and some may have lowered the bar so more people can qualify, this may be due to the stimulus package, the economy, Obama's share the wealth or health care reform. One example of this is the Food Stamp Program, now called SNAP which has changed the poverty rate eligibility in October 2010 so more people can qualify.
If you think you will not be eligible for any of these without even reading the guidelines or applying then you are doing nothing to help yourself. If you have applied before and were not eligible then you should apply again since the guidelines may have changed or else you may now become eligible under an exception or appeal and certain circumstances could be taken into consideration.
If you are reading this then you are likely disabled and unable to work, retired or unemployed which means you have plenty of free time, wouldn't it be worth it to check into these programs online or make that phone call to try and make life more comfortable for you and your family? Does it really hurt to find out?

Local libraries also have books about how to apply for disability which can increase your chances of getting approved the first time your application is submitted without having to pay an attorney. There are also used books sold online that will help. Some of these books are written by retired social security case workers.

The Social Security and Disability Resource Center website (SSDRC.com) provides a detailed overview of how the federal disability system works (social security disability and SSI) and also provides answers to many questions that applicants typically have, but often have trouble finding answers to. For the most part, this site is based on the author's personal experience as a former disability-medicaid caseworker, and also as a former disability examiner for the social security administration.
"God helps those who help themselves"INSURANCE FOR RECEPIENTS OF MEDICARE OR BOTH MEDICARE AND MEDICAID:
Many people on Medicare or Medicare and Medicaid both do not realize that there are supplemental insurance plans that are available, some with no premium, depending on which plan you choose. No premium means at no charge.
There are different insurance plans to meet different needs, what is the right plan for me may not be the right plan for someone else. If you want to get the most out of your Medicaid or Medicare contact the representative below.
Patricia Mello (she only covers Upstate South Carolina) of Senior Benefit Solutions can get people free diabetic supplies IF the person qualifies, arthritis braces and free power chairs and other medical equipment to help. If people have Medicare or Medicare and Medicaid both she can put them on Care Improvement Plus (CIP) and now they will get an immediate line of help for extra help with their power bill, phone bill and rent. Also any other programs that become available from the government. Everyone with diabetes is eligible to receive one pair of diabetic shoes per year at no cost to them.
They also carry low cost burial insurance for everyone as well as lower priced Medicare supplements and annuities that grow at 5.5% interest and are safe, untouchable by recession, banks or investment, these can be used to pay a yearly income, insurance premiums or other needs without ever touching the principal and paying out tax free for these needs. They have stand alone dental plans and vision for seniors or families and critical health plans for heart attack, stroke and cancer and home nursing and long term care plans and cash plans that pay a lump sum if you have to go to the hospital for any reason. Any kind of insurance offered she now carries with the top 50 companies in the state and is now licensed in North Carolina also. They carry all Humana products which just came out with an entire new line from life insurance for your grandchild to building a college fund and protecting your money for your family. They have a cancer plan that pays a lump sum benefit to you at first diagnosis of everything but simple skin cancer that can be removed, this can be $25,000 to $50,000 and pays cash to you in addition to any other plan you may have.
1 out of 4 people will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. This pays immediately upon diagnosis, no treatment or waiting for benefits. She also has discount programs for dental and vision.
They are always available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day and is the only insurance agents who tells each and every client to call them at home. They have done this for 30 years now and makes sure their clients know when they will be gone for more than a few days and who they can contact if they need help while they are gone. Their clients are never left without an agent they can call if need be. Once a person becomes a client they no longer need to have any insurance worries, if a better plan becomes available for their needs, she will have it and will change them to it. They work for each client and not for any insurance company so she can always do the very best for every client according to their individual needs.
To contact Pattie Mello call her home office (864) 271-8755 and leave a message on her voice mail and state EXACTLY what you want to discuss with her, such as a drug plan or a Medicare advantage with drug plan (Care Improvement Plus is a Medicare Advantage with drug plan) and be sure to leave your full name, full address and phone number. She has to have this recorded and then she will send you a scope of appointment form which you must sign and mail back to her within 48 hours. You may want to spell your name and street name so that it is understood.PHARMACY DISCOUNTS:
When a doctor prescribes a medication be sure to ask for free samples they often have plenty and doctors and pharmacists often have coupons for medications. And ask if a lower cost generic form of the prescribed medication is available or if a cheaper over the counter medication (OTC) will achieve the same effect or a cheaper priced prescription medication. If you are taking a tablet that comes in more than one strength (say 15mg and 30mg), you may be able to cut your medication costs by having the higher strength tablets cut in half. Talk to your doctor and pharmacist to see if this is a viable option for you.
Most pharmacies will happily split the pills for you, but you can purchase an inexpensive pill splitter, if you need to do it yourself. Here is an article with some advice about pill splitting: www.fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm171492.htm
If you do want to buy a pill splitter buy one that has a rubber insert to hold the pill so that you get nice, even halves. Keep in mind that split tablets may be affected by heat and humidity, so only split one pill at a time. Some pharmacies may offer a discount for switching a prescription from another pharmacy. If you are a veteran, check with the Veterans Administration to see if you qualify for benefits. Buying in 90 day supplies can be cheaper than buying in 30 day supplies, be sure to follow the storage information to maintain its quality. Some doctors will write a prescription for a year supply which the pharmacy can fill at 90 day increments.

Pharmacies offering no charge mailing along with $4 generic prescriptions have become popular, the links to these can be found on this website: www.ncsl.org/programs/health/generic$.htm
If you are prescribed an antibiotic, some or maybe all of the pharmacies that offer $4 prescriptions also offer free antibiotics, you will have to call around to find one that does.
There may be other pharmacies that mail the prescriptions to the home at no additional costs, my insurance plans pharmacy, Care Improvement Plus mails my generics to my home, my brand name medications from the brand name free prescription programs are either mailed directly to my home or to my doctors office and I either schedule my next appointment around that delivery date and pick them up at that time or else my doctors office mails them to me. Each pharmaceutical company that offers the Free prescription programs does it differently just as their guidelines and application process varies.
(Further discounts and how to get your brand name prescriptions for Free see page 2)
If for whatever reason you still want to pick up your medications there are some that have a drive through. You can check with your local pharmacies to see if any of them do.

Check with your pharmacy to see if they offer a senior citizen discount on prescriptions, as far as I know all the ones that do, consider age 50 as a senior citizen. For that matter ask at grocery stores and restaurants also to see if there is a senior citizen discount with them. At Denny's for example it is age 55.

Disabled widowers benefits can start as early as age 50, you would actually be filing on your spouse's record and you still have to get a medical decision.
When you file for Social Security disability, the benefit amount you get is what you get if you were at your full retirement age. So if you filed for disability benefits today, your benefit amount would be what you get when you hit 67. That’s the full retirement age. So if you file for disability today and continue to receive it for the rest of your life, nothing’s going to change for you when you hit 67. It’s not going to change because you are already getting your maximum amount. Now, when a person is approaching 62 or they’re already 62 or they’re 63 or they’re 64 and they go in to file for disability benefits, Social Security is going to advise them to do this. They’re going to say is what we should do for you is we should start taking a retirement application for you today and let’s file for disability. The reason they’re going to take a retirement benefit for you is they can start paying you checks right away because you’re eligible based on your age. Now, when you take retirement early it is reduced. It’s reduced for every month you take it prior to your full retirement age. So it’s going to be a reduced amount. The reason you’re filing for disability at the same time is if you’re approved for disability benefits, the benefit amount is going to be up at the full amount. You’re not going to have that reduction that you take at retirement and you’ll get paid the difference. So if you get awarded the disability benefits and they’ve paid you $1,200 but you’re due $1,600 as a disabled individual, once you’re awarded, you’re going to get that $300 difference for those months. (You can not get retirement earlier than age 62, unless you get it through your employer).
If you become disabled or you file for retirement benefits, there’s other family members in your household that could be eligible for a benefit. There’s your children. Children under the age of 18. Spouse can be eligible depending on the situation. There’s aged spouse, if your spouse is 62 or older, or there’s a benefit to a spouse if you have children under 16 in the household. So it’s not just yourself that can be entitled to a check. There’s other people in your household that can also be eligible. And it’s Social Security’s job to look for those benefits for you.
When you are eligible for retirement benefits or if you happen to be receiving Social Security disability, your disabled children can be eligible for a benefit based on your record. What they’re called are adult-disabled children and as long as they were disabled prior to the age of 21, it has to be proven that they were disabled prior to the age of 21; they can receive benefits under your records under Social Security. With Social Security it can be a little easier to deal with and it would be 50% of whatever you’re receiving. That’s called the disabled adult child benefit.

You can have your social security check deposited directly into your bank account and also have your bills on automatic payments. This will save you gas from having to make a trip to your bank every month and making a deposit and writing checks and mailing them out. It will also avoid late fees and utilities shut off since your bills will be paid on time and in my case my cell phone carrier Verizon made me a Preferred Customer since my bill is always paid on time, they boosted my minutes from 450 to 700 for one month on my plan with no increase in my bill since I am a Preferred Customer, but here once again I had to call Verizon and ask for this in order to get it. Plus it avoids misplacing your social security check and if you are in the hospital and unable to be home to pay out bills.
Also, if you bank with Bank of America there is a monthly checking account fee of $8.95 but there are two ways to avoid this is, have a daily balance of $1,500 or else have a check directly deposited into your account each month, such as your social security check. Bank of America's phone number is 1-800-432-1000.
If you get your prescriptions mailed to you from a pharmacy, such as CVS for example, you can also have your debit card on record with them and the cost will be deducted from your account before your prescriptions are mailed to you. Contact your bank or local social security office to arrange direct deposit and then contact your utility companies and others that you want on auto pay. You can track both online, all banks and companies have a website which you can sign up for and do this. Some companies will even email you or text you to notify you each month that payment was made.
Here is a website called US Direct Express www.usdirectexpress.com/edcfdtclient/index.html which offers a debit card that can be used to access your social security money for purchases. This may be good for people who do not have a bank account.

This program www.safelink.com became available in South Carolina October 1st 2010, I just applied for my free cell phone (including free minutes) soon after it became available in my state. I have a friend in NC and another in NY and another in Pa who all have one of these free phones and they like it very much. One friend told me that it needs to be plugged in for 3 days to charge up before you use it. It doesn't hurt to sign up to see if you qualify, only takes a minute. There are safe, clean housing available for the low income but you have to look around. I found and live in an apartment complex that bases rent on income, they also maintain the outside of the property and inspect the inside of the apartments periodically. Anyone that wants to lease here is required to go to the local police department first and have a criminal background check done on themselves, so anyone with a criminal history is not permitted to live here. Friends of mine often compliment on how nice the apartment complex is maintained. An exterminator comes in on a regular basis also. It happens to be in an ideal location with a grocery store, Dollar Store, gas station, H&R Block, Enterprise Car Rental and video store and 2 restaurants across the street, and a Pizza Hut delivery. And down the road about 7 miles and there are a few other grocery stores, a Bank of America and
several restaurants and a Walmart.
A hospital and ambulance service and doctors offices 3 miles down the road and a CVS and public library and a few more restaurants and also 3 churches within a short walking distance up the road into downtown, along with a police and fire department downtown equipped with a rescue van directly across the street from there. The police and medical help is close at hand. There is a major highway 3 blocks down the road which leads 16 miles into Greenville. And 2 other major highways close by and a fire hydrant right outside my building.
